For Remote Professionals

Colombia works. So do you. Let's make both happen at the same time.

For remote professionals who want to maintain their output, not lower their standards.

Fourteen days in Colombia where your morning calls happen on verified 200+ Mbps fiber, your afternoons have the energy of cities that are genuinely alive, and your weekends take you to Caribbean coastlines, cloud forests, and coffee country that most remote workers never find on their own. Tropical Shift is a workation designed by someone who spent 13 years in hospitality making sure professionals have everything they need before they need it.

The Practical Case

Why Colombia. Not as a concept, as a practical decision.

Colombia runs on UTC–5 year-round, no daylight saving complications, full overlap with the US east coast. Medellín offers 24°C weather every day of the year. Bogotá has a culinary and cultural scene that surprises everyone who gives it more than a layover. The Caribbean coast is a three-hour flight away. Fresh tropical fruit is available every single day because the variety of climates means there is no off-season. The nightlife is some of the best in Latin America. The landscapes change completely from one region to the next. And the infrastructure, fiber internet, modern airports, reliable domestic flights is significantly better than most people expect.

Time Zone

UTC-5, year-round. No daylight saving time. If your calls are with New York, you are in the same zone all year. UK is 5 hours ahead, West Coast is 3 hours behind. A 9am start in Medellin or Bogota gives you full overlap with the US east coast and workable hours into Europe.

Connectivity

Bogota and Medellin both average 130+ Mbps on fixed broadband. Our accommodations are tested before we book them for you, not rated by previous guests on Airbnb. You will not arrive to discover the WiFi is 'usually fine.'

Cost of Living

A comfortable life in Medellin or Bogota: a good apartment, daily restaurants, local transport, a reasonable social life, costs roughly one third of what you spend in a comparable European or North American city. This is not a backpacker estimate. This is what it costs when you live like a professional.

The Rest of It

Working from Colombia is not just cheaper. It is more interesting. Two oceans. The world's highest density of bird species. The Andes, the Amazon, the Caribbean coast. The weekends pay for the plane ticket.

The Service

What this is and what it is not.

Most digital nomad resources give you a list. Best coworking spaces in Medellin. Best neighborhoods for WiFi. Best apps to use. That information exists and we put some of it in our blog so you can find it when you need it.

What we offer is different. We design the entire experience, not just the desk. Accommodation is verified before you arrive: connection speed tested, workspace confirmed, air conditioning functional before your first call. Weekends are arranged so that when Friday afternoon comes, your only decision is whether to get up at 6am for the boat or sleep until 7. And there is a real person, our concierge, via WhatsApp, available throughout your stay for the things that take mental energy away from your work.

Verified Workspaces

Not 'usually has good WiFi.' Tested, confirmed, 200+ Mbps fiber or Starlink at every accommodation. Ergonomic setup included. You will not lose a call.

Curated Weekends

Private excursions designed around what Colombia actually does well: cloud forests, reservoir boat tours, Caribbean sailing, Sierra Nevada coffee haciendas. Not tourist packages.

Local Concierge

A real person in Colombia on WhatsApp. Available for reservations, recommendations, logistics, and anything taking time away from your work or your weekend.

The Honest Version

Made for professionals

Tropical Shift is for the remote professional who works by choice, earns well, and has a specific standard for both their workspace and their time off. If you want the cheapest desk in Medellin, there are excellent coworking day passes and we can point you to them. That is a different need.

If you want 14 days in Colombia where your calls happen reliably, your evenings have good dinner reservations waiting, and your weekends are genuinely worth being in South America for, that is what this is built around. The price reflects what it takes to deliver that without compromise.

"

I have met many digital nomads who arrive in Colombia with a very surface-level idea of the country. That is exactly why I built Tropical Shift. Colombia has something most destinations cannot offer: real contrasts. A world-class restaurant and a market where families have been selling exotic fruit for generations, both within the same city. Three completely different climates in a two-hour flight. A culture so diverse it changes the way people see not just the country, but Colombians themselves. Nomads stay longer than tourists. They have time to go deeper. I wanted to build something worthy of that time.

The Legal Framework

Staying longer than two weeks? Colombia has a visa for that.

If the 14 days make you want to stay past checkout, Colombia launched its Visa V Nomadas Digitales in 2022. It allows qualifying remote workers to live legally in the country for up to two years, no 90-day tourist limit, no border runs.

Passport from a visa-exempt country (USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia and others)
Monthly income of at least ~USD 1,100 from sources outside Colombia
Proof of remote employment, freelance contracts, or digital business
International health insurance covering Colombia including hospitalization
Clean criminal record (background check required for most nationalities as of 2025)

Application is fully online through the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancilleria). Processing: 2-4 weeks. Total fees: approximately USD 220-280. If approved for more than 3 months, you must register with Migracion Colombia and obtain a Cedula de Extranjeria within 15 days of arrival. Requirements and income thresholds change. Always verify at cancilleria.gov.co before applying.
